May 28, 2018 Fig Tree Roundtable Forum – May 24th 2018 Dear Fig Tree Community We held our second Roundtable Forum of 2018 last Thursday evening at the Kahanoff Centre. Approximately 30 people attended to discuss and share experiences around “Effectiveness” for international development. This was the second of a four-part series to explore the four guiding principles of Fig Tree: collaboration, effectiveness, sustainability, and transparency. Volunteers Marie Delaporte, Sarah Piwowarczyk, and newcomer Janet Eremenko of the Roundtable team organized a well-received event. Opening the program was a presentation by Mike Deboski and Ryan Morrison on legacy giving structures that mutually benefit charities and benefactors. Their presentation can be found on the Fig Tree web site under the “Resources” section. Their company, Deboski & Co., were proud sponsors of this second forum of 2018 and we are grateful for their support. The guest speaker was N’Mamah Kamara, an entrepreneur from Sierra Leone. Until 2002, She was scavenging the swamps of her country to feed her family after she was made a widow by the civil war. At that time, she took the sewing and business skills courses offered in her community by Sewing Seeds Canada, a Fig Tree Roundtable member. Since graduating, N’Mamah has opened three sewing centres and employs 18 people. In 2017, she opened her own sewing school to “pay it forward” which was financed by a joint investment from Sewing Seeds and Fig Tree. Through an interview format with Tammy Bartel, Vice-President of Sewing Seeds, N’Mamah shared her story of hope and inspiration against all odds. Sewing Seeds invited all Roundtable members to their “Tea with N’Mamah” event to be held at Mount Royal University from 2 pm to 4 pm on Sunday, June 3, 2018. Event details can be found at http://www.sewingseedscanada.com/events/ As always, we will continue to change the world in new and wonderful ways! Warm regards, Jeff Arsenych Fig Tree Foundation Strategic Advisor, Interim CEO
